Preparing and serving coffee is one of the most important traditions of hospitality in the United Arab Emirates. Gahwa and its associated customs has been an essential part of Arab culture for several centuries. The way it is prepared and served is characterised by authentic Arab traditions and etiquette. It is an opportunity for venues in Abu Dhabi to become official Bait Al Gahwa Operators. To legally operate Bait Al Gahwa experience, entities must complete the training programme and obtain an official ‘Certified Operator’ Permit. This permit authorises operators to deliver the Gahwa experience, following cultural guidelines set by the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi.
As Gahwa has a key role in the culture and hospitality of the region, the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi pioneered the first Gahwa Championships, in Abu Dhabi in December 2019. The Gahwa Championships test the knowledge and practice of contestants from across the region, in areas such as the heritage of Gahwa; bean selection and roasting; and Gahwa preparation and serving. The annual championship also features categories specific to roasting anda Gahwa Beverage Concept Award.
